“I really feel like the dining room is a forgotten room,” says the designer, who set out to prove how vital the space is to a home. The room is anchored by a Riva 1920 table made with the wood of a 50,000-year-old Kauri tree, which Levine surrounded with seating for 12. Another seating area with views of the garden was designed for more intimate dining, games, or meetings, and it’s illuminated by a Murano glass chandelier. At the far end of the room, Levine installed a lush purple sofa with cocktail tables, creating the perfect spot for drinks, dessert, or relaxing with a cup of coffee. As one of the country’s oldest house and garden tours, the Pasadena Showcase House of Design benefits the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts, an all-volunteer organization that contributes to arts and music nonprofits in Southern California. The event draws more than 25,000 guests each year and offers several dining spaces, including Roe Japanese Fusion, the Tudor Rose Bistro, and Wattle & Daub Tavern.

Unit renovations often also included the implementation of a double-galley kitchen, which consisted of two identical smaller-scale kitchens, one of which could be closed down during slow periods in order to avoid excessive operation expenses. Shortly after the commencement of unit renovations and the introduction of lunch and dinner items, IHOP began experiencing a steady increase in sales. Most newly renovated IHOP restaurants doubled their annual sales, and soon many of them were breaking the $1 million mark each year, up from $300,000 a year before the changes. Many franchisees attributed this sudden success in the lunch and dinner market to the attractive prices offered at IHOP.

The “starting lineup” offers chicken strip sandwiches, hot dogs, a sirloin tips sandwich and a cheesesteak. A combo plate is called “the triple play” and “the closer” is a ball bucket of doughnut holes tossed in cinnamon sugar. After building three successful pancake houses, Lapin, president and chairman, and his brother, Jerry, executive vice president, decided the best way to expand quickly and truly become “international” was to franchise. In 1993, IHOP introduced the first major addition to its menu since the 1980s, unveiling Country Griddle Cakes in September 1993, pairing itself with Nabisco, whose Cream of Wheat product was a primary ingredient in the pancakes. The partnership between the two companies came on IHOP's 35th anniversary and on Nabisco's 100th, and provided each with an excellent advertising opportunity.

The new pancake was supported by television spots featuring Cliff, who promoted the new IHOP product as well as Nabisco's Cream of Wheat. Furthermore, almost 20 million coupons offering a free stack of Country Griddle Cakes with the purchase of an IHOP entree were distributed on Nabisco Cream of Wheat boxes across the country. Meanwhile, SVIDO had begun searching for a buyer for the IHOP Corporation. After approximately four years of unsuccessful attempts to sell the company to an outside suitor, Herzer and other members of IHOP's management began planning a leveraged buyout, enlisting the services of several different institutional investors. In May 1987, this investment team, led by Herzer, purchased IHOP from SVIDO for an estimated $50 million.

IHOP® Los Angeles, CA

In 1996 the IHOP system included over 700 International House of Pancakes restaurants in 36 states, Canada, and Japan. In 1981 IHOP became a private company when Jahn repurchased 52 percent of its stock. The son of a professional drummer, Lapin was born in New York but moved to Los Angeles with his family when he was a teenager. After serving in the Army, he went through film school at USC and worked in television production.

As he watched fast-food chains, such as McDonald’s and Taco Bell, take off in Southern California, Lapin longed for his own restaurant. Researching foods he might market to the masses, he settled on pancakes and waffles. While IHOP grew steadily throughout the 1960s, International Industries continued to expand its portfolio by obtaining additional businesses each year. By the early 1970s, International Industries was overflowing with businesses, but IHOP was one of only two that were producing a profit. The other, the Orange Julius chain, was sold to keep the company afloat, and IHOP's profits were used to support the rest of International Industries' holdings.

Along with the newly acquired IHOP chain, International Industries franchised many other restaurant and food service concepts, including Copper Penney coffee shops, Love's Wood Pit Barbecue, and the Orange Julius chain. After years of slowly restructuring the company and reinvesting its profits in further improvements, IHOP and its stock were continuing to soar. Suddenly, financial analysts were taking note, hailing the corporation as an overnight phenomenon with the potential of a gold mine. Forbes magazine ranked IHOP 102 out of 200 of the best small companies in the United States, one of only three food service companies to be included.

“I thought, if somebody’s taking care of the baby, they have a space where they can come and feel like it’s a retreat,” Sabatella says. The designer outfitted a door handcrafted in India with a vintage mirror to create a one of a kind headboard and bathed the space in deep emerald green. The glamorous touches continue in the ensuite bath, where Sabatella added a custom mirror-tiled tub that plays off the vintage French tile floor.

At Lincoln, buttermilk pancakes are permanent menu favorites, but the black sesame coconut pancakes with black sesame whipped cream, coconut caramel, and toasted coconut are a balanced seasonal addition. Through the 1960s, Lapin rapidly built on that thought to expand IHOP, not only in restaurants but also in subsidiaries. Hand-painted floors were the jumping-off point for designer Amy Peltier’s soothing primary bedroom design. “It was so much work, but it turned out beautiful.” The firm wanted the space to feel “light and airy and breezy,” and incorporated fabrics and wall coverings by Thibaut in a soft color palette.

Lapin added the A-frame roof to his chalet theme in 1960 when he built the Woodland Hills IHOP on Ventura Boulevard. He thought the architectural style was homey -- an important element for the man who found his greatest success in family restaurants. For the original Toluca Lake restaurant that Lapin started in 1958 with $25,000, he hired a Cordon Bleu chef to create unusual pancakes, such as Tahitian Orange Pineapple and Kauai Coconut.

The lunch and dinner menu was also crafted to accommodate the eating habits of IHOP's more nutritionally aware customers by offering vegetarian plates, chicken, and seafood. IHOP Corporation operates and franchises the International House of Pancakes restaurant concept in the United States and Canada. In fact, IHOP is among those companies responsible for the prevalence of affordable full-service family dining. The company now stands as the third-largest family-style dining chain, just behind Denny's Corporation and Waffle House Inc. In 2003, the IHOP system included over 1,136 International House of Pancakes restaurants in 48 states and Canada. Each year, IHOP restaurants serve over 700 million pancakes, 20 million pounds of breakfast meats, and over 300 million cups of coffee.

Analysts were predicting huge rises in the stock's value, some as high as 60 percent. Although IHOP had just brought attention to itself by entering the public arena in 1991, it had actually been enjoying increases in its revenues every month since the early 1980s. In August 1992, IHOP made another strategic move in its effort to dominate the family-dining market when it acquired 23 units in the Pacific Northwest from JB's Restaurants, Inc.

Restaurant Amenities

A Restaurants & Institutions survey revealed that the top trends for the food service industry to follow were home-style value meals, combo breakfasts, anything in a skillet, and pancakes. It seemed that IHOP's strategic priorities were right on the money, and the company entered the mid-1990s in a position to strengthen its standing in the family dining market. The first International House of Pancakes restaurant opened in 1958 in Toluca Lake, California, under the direction of founder Al Lapin, Jr. After winning over consumers with its affordable pancake breakfasts and numerous flavored syrups, the business quickly expanded into a small chain of restaurants. Weekend patrons were often confronted with lines that stretched all the way out the establishments' doors. A year later, in 1959, the IHOP chain became an operating division of International Industries, a public company that held more than 20 different businesses and was strongly rooted in the franchising concept.

The protests have even spread to Europe, with French police removing dozens of students from the Sorbonne university after pro-Palestinian protesters occupied the main courtyard. In Canada, student protest camps have popped up at the University of Ottawa, McGill University in Montreal and the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, The Canadian Press reported. Whether ballpark and racetrack food remains appealing enough off site to support hundreds of locations remains to be seen.

“One of the main things we did was add a window seat, which looks like it should always have been here,” Slesinski says. “Our whole goal with this space was basically to turn the lights on in the room, bring in the garden that’s outside, and kind of have an experience of a breath of fresh air,” Brosio says. While IHOP enjoyed a period of overall growth in sales and earnings, its monthly same store sales results began to falter due to changing consumer demand and heightened competition. Same store sales appeared to be gaining momentum in 2003 as IHOP management worked to position the company as the leading family dining destination in the industry. Usurping competitors Denny's and Waffle House from their top spots, however, was contingent upon the success of the new franchise model and the firm's aggressive branding campaign. The firm began to restructure its debt in order to strengthen its financial position and brought in Julia A. Stewart as president and chief operating officer to head up the company's expansion efforts. Under her leadership, IHOP's management team began taking several steps to restore the firm's same store sales growth.

The school said in an email to students that bringing back police “at this time” would be counterproductive. ‎House of Balloons Original Album by The Weeknd

Because of this, it is widely considered one of the most influential R&B projects in recent years. House of Balloons, along with Thursday and Echoes of Silence, was later remastered as the Trilogy album in 2012, with one extra song on each tape. The bonus track for this mixtape was his twenty-eighth song, “Twenty Eight”. There was a lot of that going on in the early 2010s — perhaps no more so than any other era, but all of it seemed to be getting attention. Death Grips made everyone forget that hip-hop had ever previously brushed shoulders with punk, noise, and metal — ditto for Sleigh Bells with regards to pop music.

Musically, House of Balloons mixes R&B with elements of rock, electro, and hip-hop. Maybe there is a deeper issue with that, but I feel like with me it’s never been about the artist and the image of the artist. And I felt like it was the most unbiased reaction you can get to the music, because you couldn’t put a face to it.

But while Ocean receded further and further into the shadows and released commercially unsuccessful, critically adored albums, the Weeknd improbably became one of the 2010s’ biggest success stories. For the omnivorous listener, hearing two disparate genres brush up against each other in ways you’d never previously imagined is a treat akin to watching Danny Devito and Arnold Schwarzenegger pal around in Twins. In December 2011, Metacritic determined that House of Balloons was the third best-reviewed project of the year.

Just over a month before House Of Balloons‘ release, Frank Ocean put out his own debut mixtape, Nostalgia, Ultra. The parallels abound — recognizable samples of indie/alternative music, casual drug references, the creators’ commitment to remaining elusive and behind-the-scenes — but in the years since, Tesfaye and Ocean have been on opposite trajectories. Nostalgia-era Ocean, with his brighter music, Coldplay and MGMT samples, and slightly bigger media presence (whereas Tesfaye wouldn’t give his first interview until 2013, Ocean was on a Fader cover by the end of 2011), seemed much more primed for the spotlight than the more dour, less family-friendly Tesfaye.

House of Balloons is the debut mixtape by the Canadian singer-songwriter the Weeknd. It was released on March 21, 2011, by the artist's own record label XO. The mixtape was released for free on the Weeknd's website and was the subject of increased media discussion upon the use of its songs on television, as well as the then-anonymous identity of the individual behind the Weeknd. House of Balloons was entirely recorded in Toronto, with production handled primarily by the Weeknd, Doc McKinney, and Illangelo, alongside additional contributions from Cirkut, Jeremy Rose and Rainer.

Trilogy is the first compilation album and major label debut by Canadian singer-songwriter the Weeknd. It is composed of remixed and remastered versions of the songs contained in his 2011 mixtapes House of Balloons, Thursday and Echoes of Silence, and three previously unreleased songs, "Twenty Eight", "Valerie", and "Till Dawn (Here Comes the Sun)" were included as bonus tracks. House of Balloons received widespread critical acclaim, and it is considered by many to be one of the most influential R&B releases in recent years, specifically the 2010s. Preceded by a string of low-profile buzz single releases throughout 2010, the mixtape attracted significant interest due to the then-anonymous identity of the individual behind the Weeknd. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from professional publications, House of Balloons received a weighted average score of 87 based on 16 reviews, indicating "universal acclaim".

Its title is derived from the nickname the singer gave to his former home in Parkdale, Toronto. The mixtape received widespread acclaim, with critics praising its dark aesthetic, production, and lyrical content. It is widely regarded as a major influence on both contemporary and alternative R&B. House of Balloons also contains elements of soul, trip hop, indie rock, dream pop, and electronic music. Lyrically, the mixtape explores the Weeknd's drug use and experiences with love, heartbreak, and promiscuity.

Liturgy and Deafheaven’s radical updates on black metal put the genre in conversation with shoegaze and other “hipster” fare. It-producers of the moment AraabMuzik and Clams Casino churned out cutting-edge rap beats that owed just as much to trance and ambient music, respectively, as they did to hip-hop. What’s more impressive and surprising, to a day-one fan, is the Weeknd’s never-ceasing commitment to self-curation and aesthetic specificity.

house of balloons tracklist

The nearly eight-minute clip is described by authors Carrie Battan and Amy Phillips of Pitchfork as, "a time traveling, Afrofuturist, science fiction battle of the sexes that demands to be watched in HD." After excitedly covering the Weeknd’s earliest music at my first-ever blog gig in Spring 2011, I vividly remember the turning point, the day in May 2015 when “Can’t Feel My Face” and “In The Night” leaked. In between Kiss Land and that leak, singles “Often” and “Earned It” had hinted at a more pop-friendly Weeknd, but not like this. Both new leaks were co-produced by superproducer Max Martin, and sounded like it.

That’s why the weirdo impulses — the whole red suit thing, the partnership with Oneohtrix Point Never, etc. — persist, but it’s also a masterclass in modern star-making. Anonymity may have been the marketing tactic du jour a decade ago, but more often than not, it’s hollow and unsustainable. What the Weeknd’s done is turn himself into a moodboard of his favorite directors, musicians, vibes. He began that process in auspicious form on House Of Balloons, and while he may have covered a ton of ground to get to where he is in 2021, the self-mythologizing is still going strong. On March 21, 2021, the tenth anniversary of the mixtape’s release, it was finally added to streaming services.

Tesfaye’s path to success was unlikely, but easy to chart in increments. “The Hills” was even bigger than “Can’t Feel My Face,” 2016’s Starboy had yet another #1 with its title track, and last year’s “Blinding Lights” is one of the most successful singles of all time, recently becoming the first-ever song to spend a whole year in the Top 10 of the Hot 100. Tesfaye’s now big enough to play Super Bowls and raise a justifiable stink about a Grammys snub. No matter how smitten you were with “What You Need” the first time you heard it, there’s no way you could’ve predicted a fraction of these achievements.

The Weeknd Reissuing Debut Mixtape House of Balloons for 10th Anniversary

House Of Balloons was the first installment of a mixtape trilogy, all of which arrived by the end of 2011. After working on his debut for years (and gifting a few cuts from its planned tracklist to Drake for his 2011 album, Take Care), the Weeknd rushed to release a follow-up. “There are lyrics on Thursday, I don’t even know what the fuck I said,” he quipped in that aforementioned 2013 interview.

Album Of The Week: Microwave Let’s Start Degeneracy

The tape has all of its predecessor’s haziness and very little of its punch. The two subsequent releases — the trilogy-capping Echoes Of Silence and lush 2013 debut album Kiss Land — also lack in areas that House Of Balloons triumphed, namely a consistent, impeccably-curated vibe. But looking back I’d call them the Weeknd’s most underrated material, victims of not sounding enough like the breakout tape.

Additionally, the mixtape was featured on several music critics' and publications' end-of-year albums lists. Complex called it the "best album of 2011;" Stereogum ranked it number 5; The Guardian ranked it number 8; The A.V. Club ranked it number 6; SPIN ranked it (as well as Thursday) number 13; while Pitchfork ranked it number 10. As a whole, House of Balloons was the seventh most frequently mentioned album in music publications' year-end top ten lists. The mixtape was named as one of the longlisted of nominees for the 2011's Polaris Music Prize. The mixtape's title track was placed on Pitchfork's list of top 100 songs of 2011 at number 57, while "The Morning" was number 15. In 2021, it was listed at No. 488 on Rolling Stone's "Top 500 Best Songs of All Time".

Kiss Land did well for itself commercially, debuting at #2, but as far as hits go, this still wasn’t Pop Star Weeknd. House of Balloons was commercially released as part of the compilation album Trilogy (2012) and included the singles "Wicked Games" and "Twenty Eight", the latter of which is a bonus track. On its tenth anniversary, the original mixtape was released in digital formats, and included samples which failed to gain copyright clearance on Trilogy. The reissue was accompanied by a limited edition line of merchandise designed by architect Daniel Arsham.

Perhaps because he was making the darkest R&B imaginable, the anonymous approach worked better for him than it did for psych-pop bands, anthemic indie bands, chandelier-scraping belters, voiceless electronic musicians, and electronic musicians who probably should’ve remained voiceless. Like Tyler, The Creator, who perhaps not-so-coincidentally was blowing up around the same time, Tesfaye’s brash lyrics were very obviously a put-on, no matter how shocking or aspirational they got. The laundry list of drugs consumed in “House Of Balloons/Glass Table Girls” gives the preposterous smoothie from the “EARL” video a run for its money; the $7,000 glass table name-dropped in the same song was probably a little out of his price range at the time. “This was still a time when ‘enigmatic electronic producer’ was a phrase you’d find in every other track blurb,” Ian Cohen recently observed when looking back on Love Remains, an album by similarly “mysterious” artist How To Dress Well that was released five months prior to House Of Balloons.

house of balloons tracklist

I knew “Can’t Feel My Face” was a lock for the charts as soon as I heard it, and I’m no Hot 100 Nostradamus. It’s a loft where the walls kick like they’re six months pregnant, where women call cabs at dawn and forget their high-heeled shoes. The Internet buckled under the strain of demand when the Weeknd followed up their highly praised "What You Need" with a free full-length mixtape a few days ago. That clamor shouldn't have been surprising; this is music that feeds off elements drawn from R&B but uses them to crack open a world that skews away from that fundamental starting point. Like a lot of great pop acts, the Weeknd are shameless in their thievery, but they also have the savvy it takes to steal wholesale from other artists and come out the other side sounding like no one but themselves. The project, primarily produced by Illangelo and Doc McKinney, pushed the boundaries of R&B, with its influences of trip-hop, indie rock and dream pop and incorporations of electronic/urban genres.

Especially R&B, which is a genre that is heavily influenced by how the artist looks. The song "High for This" was featured in the promo for the final season of the HBO show Entourage in July 2011. On November 24, 2011, the Weeknd's first official music video, for his song "The Knowing," hit the Internet on his Vimeo page. The song was first released on House of Balloons and the video was directed by French filmmaker Mikael Colombu, who has also worked with American singer CeeLo Green.

Trilogy received generally positive reviews from critics, who reinforced the previous acclaim of the mixtapes, although some found it indulgent. It was promoted with three singles and the Weeknd's concert tour during September to November 2012. The album charted at number five in Canada and number four in the United States. How did an X-rated lothario, whose live debut in the US (at Coachella 2012) earned mixed reviews, make his way to the biggest stages in the world? For one, he’s toned down his content considerably since his “Or Nah” remix days — the most eyebrow-raising part of his last album is an extended bit about having sex in his recording studio, and save for a couple of really gross bars, he’s steered clear of major controversy (just don’t ask stan armies). The singles have gotten poppier; his performance chops, while still not god-tier, have improved.

How To Make A Gingerbread House Recipe & Template

gingerbread house gingerbread

Haven't tasted the final product yet but the raw dough tastes amazing with the zest. Leave a small (2cm is fine) border around the scores edges 4. Doing this method is better than cutting the dough to the exact template as you will prevent the edges from spreading. Ditch the “pinterest perfection” goal and get messy.

Decorative Candy and Other Items

At this point, it’s really for display purposes only. Before you begin, find a base to put the house on. Your gingerbread house will be 5-1/2 inches wide and 6-1/2 inches long.

I wish the ingredients were listed in amounts for half batch, since you can’t exactly measure out the full amount and then divide in half without remeasuring. I get that you’d have to make two batches to make a full house, but that can be an included note. Just got the first batch out of the oven and the gingerbread itself is delicious. Not sure how it will stand up house-wise, but warm-cookie-wise, it's fab.

Are gingerbread houses edible?

I use a guide that is about 5 – 6 mm thick for most of the dough. For smaller parts of the house (chimney, doors, window shutters), I use dough guide that is thinner, about 3 mm. The rolled out dough should fit inside a half sheet baking sheet.

Houses can be assembled directly onto a plate or cake stand, but if you’re making many or want a portable choice, foil-wrapped cardboard makes a great base. Cut a circle a bit larger than the house from corrugated cardboard and wrap in a layer of heavy-duty aluminum foil. If you make this gingerbread house recipe, leave a comment and review below. Hold it high over the house and gently shake allowing the sugar to fall onto the roof of the gingerbread house. After the gingerbread house is fully decorated, give it a dusting of snow! This makes it look like a snowy cottage and is the final touch in creating a beautiful gingerbread house.

Use dough thickness guide to make it easier to roll out the dough to an even thickness. Step 7 – Stick the template onto the cardboard. Use slightly thick cardboard and non-toxic glue like a glue stick. Apply the glue on the back of the printed template. Remember to apply the glue outside of the template line AND inside (Image 17).

Take a basic gingerbread house to the next level with an edible sugar glass star and intricately piped icing decorations. For the base of the gingerbread house choose something flat and sturdy. You can use a cardboard cake board, a large platter or plate, a pretty cookie sheet, a cutting board, or a cake stand.

Homemade Strawberry Cake

The dough might be reaching the top of your bowl, but that’s OK. The mixture might look curdled at this stage and that’s OK. Temperature differences in the ingredients can lead to this, but the dough will come together when the flour is added. Next mix in the vanilla and molasses (Images 7 & 8), until mixed through.

If you’re using egg whites, whisk the egg whites and cream of tartar until you have a foamy mixture (Images 31 and 32). OR, you have the option of removing the scrap dough, and baking just the shapes you need (Image 27). Step 11 – Preheat your oven to 325 F (while the dough is chilling). Any remaining space can be used to cut out the chimney parts, and other gingerbread shapes you like.

Made my own house design, cutting template pieces from plain 8.5X11 paper. Plenty if your house is within letter width/ht.4. Ran out of AP flour so added balance of 4.5 c white wheat. Almost 20 years ago I was spending one of my first Christmases away from my family while serving as a missionary for my church. A family from our congregation invited the missionaries over for a gingerbread house decorating party and it was so much fun!

I recommend starting a little above the base of the overturned sugar cone and working your way up to the top to cover it with icing. I was able to hold it on the inside with my fingers and just twist my wrist to work around the cone. I recommend making the gingerbread a day or two in advance so that you can relax and enjoy putting the gingerbread house together later. Attempting the gingerbread, icing, and construction all on the same day can be challenging. Place both pieces of the roof on top where they go and gently press into place. Let the house dry for at least 30 minutes before decorating.

The Best and Easy Gingerbread House Recipe

I would recommend another royal icing recipe than this one. I am a chef and, in my professional view, the template and the royal icing recipe need to be tweaked. Contained within you’ll find no evil witches, just delicious, seasonal cheer. And you don’t have wander through the woods of Germany to find life-size gingerbread creations. In fact there are a few you can check out right here in Southern California.

For the Icing

It’s important that the butter and sugar are creamy at this stage, but the mix doesn’t have to be too fluffy. Festive recipes that bring the flavor, without breaking your budget. From there, the demand grew when the Brothers Grimm released “Hansel and Gretel,” a children’s story that features a house made of entirely — you guessed it — sweet treats. Next, add icing to the bottom of the back panel and press it against the sides of the house and the bottom of the platter.

Gingerbread House Recipe to Build One Like a Pro

The most successful way to roll out this gingerbread cookie dough is between two sheets of parchment paper. It will stick to your counter no matter how much you flour it. Print out the template and cut out the shapes. The chimney is totally optional, but I think it’s a cute addition. Create a fun modern color scheme with pink frosting and green sour straps.

Tips for recipe success

In winter, the butter might still be too cold, so you can keep it in a warmer area to let it warm up and soften more. If you live in New Zealand or Australia, you can use treacle instead of fancy molasses, if you don’t like the flavor of blackstrap molasses. However, you can use unsulphured blackstrap molasses as well. But the taste will be different with blackstrap molasses, as it’s more bitter and salty with a potent molassey / mineral flavor. I've had a complicated "situationship" with this classic dish, but finally have a recipe I love.

Other than that, the recipes are pretty similar. Chilling the dough is imperative—otherwise the house pieces will lose shape and constructing will be impossible. The dough is a little sticky from the molasses, so I recommend chilling in two discs before rolling out.

Homemade Strawberry Cake

The right tools will make your construction project go much more smoothly. You’ll need a few baking basics like a rolling pin, parchment paper, a thin spatula, a sharp knife, and piping bags. You’ll also need an electric mixer for the royal icing. If you plan to build a house just for display, appearance and aroma are more important than flavor, so choose a stiffer dough like this Construction Gingerbread. It has the flavor and aroma of a cookie meant for munching, but with a texture that’s a bit firmer and tougher than other recipes.

Using the proper icing (in this case, royal icing) will make a huge difference in how secure your gingerbread house is, since the icing is the glue that holds it together. I’ve had success with decorating mine right away, but do what works best for you. Here’s my completely homemade gingerbread house recipe including how to bake, construct, and decorate with royal icing and buttercream. Everything can be prepared in advance, see my make ahead tip after the recipe instructions. House structure must completely set for at least 4-6 hours before decorating.

Sugarplum Gingerbread Cake

It needs to be able to hold up to humidity and sitting out for a few weeks, so it bakes really hard and strong. That said, my kids kept nibbling on spare pieces of the gingerbread whenever I wasn’t looking. If any of your gingerbread house pieces break, do not fret! You can glue the pieces back together using the icing.

This is ideal if you’re building a complicated design or if you want to display your gingerbread house for a long time. This specialty ingredient hardens quickly and is more fast-drying than butter frosting. In addition, if you want to keep your house for as long as possible, you’ll want a frosting that’s devoid of any butter, as this can cause it to rot faster. To the modern cook, making a gingerbread house may seem nearly as daunting as building a real house. But, like dyeing Easter eggs, it’s a rewarding, hands-on way to connect to holiday traditions of the past.

The correct consistency should be spreadable but stiff, so that the royal icing will not “run” or spread, but still easily pipeable (Image 35). If there are any edges that are not straight, don’t worry! You can use royal icing to fill and straighten the edges, or you can use a micro planer to carefully shave off excess cookie on the sides (Image 28). I like to make several shallow cuts over the same line until I cut through the cardboard (Image 20).

Making Gingerbread Houses is a much loved holiday tradition and a perfect activity to bring friends and family together this season. Other favorites that get reinterpreted across different cuisines include burgers and fries, oxtail and rice and cakes and pies. Perhaps the most ingenious facet of this sequel — and one so useful it’s a marvel it isn’t included in all books linked to ample online content — is the addition of QR codes at the corner of every recipe. With the simple opening of your phone’s camera you’ll be taken to the recipe’s corresponding “Pasta Grannies” episode on Youtube, the method laid out in video form, the nonne come to life. It’s a true marvel these methods and recipes are preserved, and with Bennison’s latest cookbook, she makes accessing, visualizing and knowing these Italian grannies and their kitchen secrets all the more effortless. The “salt larder” section of her book, with simple recipes for things like Acadian salted scallions, salted shiso leaves and spiced green mango pickle will give any level of cook a whole new set of go-to flavorings to wake up even the most basic weeknight supper.

This novel reminds me of ‘March’ by Geraldine Brooks which I would also recommend to readers. Part of that story takes place on a cotton plantation that employs freed slaves and there are similar relationships between the characters. The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom is complicated and compelling with realistic characters and complex relationships. There is a richness in detail for the setting and the period. Grissom is able to paint a vivid picture of the love of a family and the joy in the simple things in life as well as the deeply moving sorrow that affected many of the characters in the book. The basic plot of The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom was intriguing.

Several years ago, I took on making masa from scratch, soaking corn kernels in calcium hydroxide to break down their outer kernels — a process called nixtamalization — then grinding them into a dough to make tortillas. The resulting tortillas were crumbly and chewy, and while I didn’t have success with them, I did have a newfound appreciation for the art of working with masa. And while I have used a reliable bag of Maseca throughout my life to make tortillas, it wasn’t until I tried Masienda’s masa that my cooking changed for the better.

These events bring about tension at Tall Oaks, and theslaves are severely beat and mistreated by Rankin, the estate overseer. Many of the characters in this novel come vividly alive. But Belle is a stronger, more fully fleshed out and consistently motivated character than Lavinia. Some of the plot twists depend on characters making false assumptions that seem unlikely.

One of its members is Belle, who also lives on the margins of two different worlds because she is the greatly loved, illegitimate daughter of the master of the plantation. The reader is drawn into the interconnected lives of two families, one white and free, the other black and enslaved. Most of the novel is told in Lavinia’s first-person voice, with shorter chapters narrated by Belle. As readers, we watch these two young women come of age. How can she reconcile her new position with her past loyalties? Belle’s love for a fellow slave conflicts with her father’s vision of a free life for her far away in Philadelphia.

Pyke’s illegitimate daughter Belle, chief cook (and alternate narrator with Lavinia), takes reluctant charge of the little white girl. Belle and the other house slaves, including Mama Mae and Papa George, their son Ben, grizzled Uncle Jacob and youngsters Beattie and Fanny, soon embrace Lavinia as their own. Pyke’s wife Martha sinks deeper into laudanum addiction during the captain’s long absences. Brutal, drunken overseer Rankin starves and beats the field slaves. The Pykes’ 11-year-old son Marshall “accidentally” causes his young sister Sally’s death, and Ben is horribly mutilated by Rankin.

Instead, she accepts the proposal of an old widower, Mr. Boran. When Mr. Boran attempts to rape Lavinia, James’ and Martha’s son Marshall intervenes. Marshall and Lavinia develop a relationship and soon marry, making Lavinia the mistress of Tall Oaks. Lavinia soon becomes aware that Marshall, unlike his father, is an abusive, violent man who raped Belle and fathered Jamie.

“Saka Saka” extends the young chef’s reach to a global audience with stories and recipes that make you want to get cooking. Black-eyed pea and beet hummus, the Cameroon-style beef and plantain stew called beef kondré, Senegalese yassa chicken and a fantastic dessert of spiced pineapple with cassava crumble are just some of the recipes worth exploring. My favorite cookbooks bring me into the kitchen with the authors. Maya-Camille Broussard’s book “Justice of the Pies” makes me feel like I’m sitting at a stool in her kitchen, listening as she recounts the story of how she started her Chicago bakery after her father died. Lavinia, born in Ireland, is an indentured servant who comes to live at Tall Oaks tobacco plantation in southern Virginia in 1791. She is placed in the care of Belle, the master’s illegitimate daughter.

“I rediscovered the untamed and varied world of mushrooms — the diverse, healthy, adaptogenic magic mycelia of the fungi kingdom — through photography,” writes Gentl. “I have always been a bit obsessed with mushrooms.” If you’re obsessed with mushrooms too (who isn’t, really?), then this book is for you. I love the photos in the “Mushroom Varieties” section that celebrate their glorious shapes and colors, close-ups of all the curves and dimples of the gills and caps that make them uniquely mesmerizing — from beech to woodear. I loved the two female protagonists, Lavinia and Belle, who narrate this story. They narrate in alternating chapters which has become a very popular technique for writers. I’m not always fond of it, I think it can often make a story feel awkward or disconnected.

One key finding in his research is that long-lived people eat remarkably similarly all over the world. Among the books he has published on the topic was “The Blue Zones Kitchen,” which documented foodways of the Blue Zones communities and provided recipes from each. Turning his attention to finding Blue Zones in America, Buettner discovered four American food traditions that match the diet of longevity that he found in the six Blue Zones around the world. “The Blue Zones American Kitchen” details those findings and offers 100 recipes that reflect them. Belle’s white grandmother raised her in the big house. She was taught to read and write, and James treated her like his daughter for much of her childhood.

Personal stories and reflections are woven in and out of recipes for cakes, candies and kakanin (desserts made with rice and coconut milk). You’ll find a halo-halo baked Alaska as well as a meaty melon chicharrón crumble, among other treats. With “The Everlasting Meal,” cookbook author Tamar Adler solves the existential question of what to do with leftovers. Centered on sustainability — both financial and environmental — her cookbook provides recipes suitable for families as well as singles while encouraging readers to be more mindful of and reduce personal food waste. Alongside gorgeous illustrations by Caitlin Winner, the book features more than 1,500 recipes to assist readers in recycling excess vegetables, fruit, meat and dairy products before they go bad, spanning casual to fancy and representing all levels of expertise. Adler also helps repurpose takeout, such as one recipe that turns the dregs of a burrito into fried rice.

Just like at the restaurant, you adjust the heat and fillings to your liking. Using her many thorough tips and the recipe for the combination soon tofu, I was able to recreate the magic of my first visit to her restaurant through the pages of “Sohn-Mat.” — J.H. A few years ago, a friend asked what’s my favorite restaurant in New York City, and with little hesitation, I answered. “Oh,” he said, “you mean every food writer’s favorite restaurant? ” It’s unoriginal to fall so deeply in love with Via Carota, but it can’t be helped.

I've been trying for a month and a half now to get a question answered about an issue I'm having with my riding lawnmower. They keep directing you to their online customer support page that is absolutely useless. A support rep will answer your question by saying someone will be in touch with you and then just crickets.I've got a $1400 riding lawnmower with a $1300 transmission replacement. Do not purchase one of their riding mowers.

Currently our most popular title is “Everything Now” by Rosecrans Baldwin. We call it the “gateway drug” to Los Angeles literature. It’s a great book for transplants and native Angelenos to better understand Los Angeles through its history, its artists and its authors. African American contributions to mixology are too often overlooked, says Toni Tipton-Martin, and her book “Juke Joints, Jazz Clubs & Juice” operates as a way to remedy that. Tipton-Martin focuses on Black traditions in imbibing going back centuries, to African fermentation practices. You’ll find versions of recognizable favorites like Manhattans, Sidecars and mint juleps as well as drinks you might be unfamiliar with, like something called a Beet-A-Rita, from chef Hoover Alexander’s restaurant Hoover’s Cooking in Austin.

'You must not become too friendly with them,' she said. ' When seven-year-old Irish orphan Lavinia is transported to Virginia to work in the kitchen of a wealthy plantation owner, she is absorbed into the life of the kitchen house and becomes part of the family of black slaves whose fates are tied to the plantation. I still remember the first time I tried Monica Lee’s combination soon tofu at Beverly Soon Tofu, which was open for 34 years before it shuttered during the pandemic. It arrived with its crimson broth sputtering and threatening to spill over a weathered jet black ttukbaegi.

Good & Sweet: A New Way to Bake With Naturally Sweet Ingredients

Because Lavinia’s parents are unable to pay their fare, James takes Lavinia back to his plantation and puts her in the “kitchen house,” or servant’s quarters for house slaves, as an indentured servant. (James sells Lavinia’s brother into servitude to a blacksmith, and he dies soon after.) At Tall Oaks, Belle oversees Lavinia, and the two eventually form an unbreakable bond. One of Jenny’s favorite books is “Breast and Eggs” by Meiko Kawakami, a novel translated from Japanese that sheds light on femininity through female relationships and a woman’s relationship to her own body. She just finished reading Han Kang’s novel “Greek Lessons ,” her follow-up to “The Vegetarian,” a thought-provoking thriller about how one woman’s choice to stop eating meat changes the course of her life and the lives around her. Nancy Silverton is a force of nature, bringing maximum imagination and exacting technique to anything she cooks or bakes.

Lavinia finds herself perilously straddling two very different worlds. When she is forced to make a choice, loyalties are brought into question, dangerous truths are laid bare, and lives are put at risk. Hunter’s debut novel tracks the experiences of her family members during the Holocaust. Four Chicago sisters anchor a sharp, sly family story of feminine guile and guilt.

A spoonful of instant oatmeal adds moisture to her recipe for Swedish meatballs that are the best I’ve ever tried. And her recipe for cardamom coffee buns in “Fresh Midwest” is inspired, taking the traditional Swedish breakfast pastry and adding coffee to the dough and filling to both enhance and help ground the heady floral aroma of the cardamom. Her perspective is fresh and approachable, while still keeping the nostalgia of her family’s recipes intact. Looking back at our favorite cookbooks of the year, their depth and scope is impressive. Among the authors are chefs, home cooks, photographers, bloggers and other storytellers.

Brooklyn restaurant Win Son and its sibling bakery specialize in both Taiwanese American classics and dishes that celebrate the diaspora with a playful bent. Sesame-laced Caesar salad, bacon-egg-and-cheese-stuffed scallion pancakes, and bolo bao fried chicken sandwiches hit the table alongside traditional beef noodles, corn soups and stir-fries. Chef-owners Josh Ku and Trigg Brown, with food writer Cathy Erway, intersperse all of these recipes and more with dialogues and musings on Taiwanese (American) identity, history and favorite dishes for a cookbook that’s just as educational as it is fun. And with persimmons now in season, you’d better believe I’m keeping the garlicky persimmon hot sauce — along with pages of their other condiment recipes — in heavy rotation. Leah Koenig’s seventh cookbook, “Portico,” is her deep dive into the Jewish cuisine of Rome. Beautiful photographs and vignettes of Rome’s Jewish history, culinary personalities and accomplished home cooks are interspersed among recipes that reflect the foodways of Rome’s Jewish community past and present.

About the author (

In the second half of the book, she takes us around the world with meat, fish, vegetable, sweet and more recipes that illustrate the many different ways salt and salt-based condiments (fish sauce, miso) are used in different cuisines. With Duguid’s guidance, you’ll not only make a delicious dinner, you’ll have a great story about the ingredients to tell your guests. Maren Ellingboe King’s take on Midwestern cuisine brushes off the convenience food kitsch in favor of honest-to-goodness home cooking that speaks to a region of the country steeped in more diverse culinary traditions than it gets credit for. She incorporates gjetost, a Norwegian cheese that tastes like toasted white chocolate, into a macaroni and cheese recipe that is now in my regular rotation for dinner parties.

Throughout their marriage, Marshall consistently rapes one of the slaves, fathering two children. In March 1954, Clarence “Buck” Stahl and Carlotta May Gates drove from Los Angeles to Las Vegas and got married in a chapel. They each worked in aviation (Buck in sales, Carlotta as a receptionist), had previous marriages, and were strapping, tall, and extremely good looking—California Apollonians out of central casting. Back home in L.A., as the newlyweds pondered their future, they became preoccupied with a promontory of land jutting out like the prow of a ship from Woods Drive in the Hollywood Hills, about 125 feet above Sunset Boulevard. It was as conspicuous as it was forbidding, visible from the couple’s house on nearby Hillside Avenue. “This lot was in pure view—every morning, every night,” Carlotta Stahl recalled.

In L.A., thousands of newer apartments have rent caps. Tenants don’t always know.

I imagine the name of the book is a play on McClenny’s popular Buzzfeed Tasty series, “Make it Fancy,” where millions of viewers watch her turn Takis, Costco chicken and candy into gourmet meals. This book is just as creative, and possibly even more fun. Andrea Nguyen’s desire to eat more meals that star plants, in a flexible, flavor-charged way, resonates loudly. Through the lens of Vietnamese food and flavors, it’s especially compelling. All of my recent homemade dinners have improved tenfold from a single section in the book on pantry secrets. There’s a jar of her pickled mustard greens in my fridge as I type this.

I give it 13 out of 10 potato-chip-topped fried bologna sandwiches. Lavinia tells the authorities it was she who killed Marshall. She is sent tojail but soon acquitted with the help of Mr. Madden, who is a lawyer. Mr.Madden also lends her money to fund a small farm at Tall Oaks, and Laviniajoyously plans to bring her family with her. They all live together at TallOaks and when Belle eventually passes away, she is buried next to herfather.

But you don’t have to be a Zen Buddhist or even a vegetarian to appreciate these recipes, author Nancy Singleton Hachisu points out. In tune with nature and the seasons, many of the dishes are simple and elegant. A tangle of young burdock and asparagus kakiage (fritter) comes across as especially fresh with height-of-spring ingredients. For some reason, the chapter of simmered dishes is especially appealing, and I’m starting to think that simmering and steaming are underrated techniques. A simple peak-summer dashi-simmered tomato with a sprig of sansho leaf for garnish is stark and beautiful.

Sliced sweet potato rounds are gently cooked in a broth punctuated with lemon and gardenia fruit pod. When simmering dashi transforms winter turnips so that they’re translucent and juicy (and then they’re garnished with scallions and yuzu), I’m all in. A few years ago, I spent a memorable day with Emily Meggett, known affectionately as Miss Emily, in her home on Edisto Island, just southwest of Charleston. It was a day of pure warmth and joy, of cooking, education and community. “When I first started cookin’,” Meggett says in her book, “Gullah Geechee Home Cooking,” “I made $11.13 per week.

Se’uda shlishit (the third meal of the day) might feature a crispy eggplant and goat cheese tart or roasted kohlrabi, cherry tomato and feta salad. Perhaps apricot tahini shortbread bars, pistachio frangipane and blood orange galette or frozen mango and pomegranate pops. In “Southern Cooking, Global Flavors,” Kenny Gilbert, a personal chef for Oprah Winfrey, shares Southern recipes from his Midwest and Southern upbringing as well as what he’s gleaned from cooking in kitchens around the world. In over 100 recipes, Gilbert builds on Southern staples like fried chicken and biscuits, offering a Korean-inspired version with gochujang and an Italian take that adds garlic, basil and Asiago cheese to the biscuit.

A compelling, powerful and poignant coming-of-age story about the fragility of family, and where love and loyalty prevail. Red-hot romances, poolside fiction, and blockbuster picks, oh my! We’re located in Historic Filipinotown near Echo Park, Silver Lake and downtown Los Angeles.

However, when James marries Martha, he moves Belle to the kitchen house to become a slave so that Martha won’t be aware of the girl’s kinship to her husband. James still favors Belle, and Martha and their son, Marshall, assume that Belle is James’s mistress. James eventually offers Belle her freedom, but Belle rejects it, choosing to stay close to her home and the fellow slave that she loves, Ben. Ben marries another slave, but he and Belle have an ongoing affair. When the novel begins, Lavinia is a little girl whose parents are attempting to come to America, but they die aboard James’s ship.

The trattoria from powerhouse couple Rita Sodi and Jody Williams (of I Sodi and Buvette, respectively) hits every note, its rustic Italian offerings often served simply and so elegantly amid all the reclaimed wood and marble and antique hutches and chairs. We’re woefully a long flight away, but thanks to Williams, Sodi and co-author Anna Kovel we can re-create its signatures at home — yes, including that towering Insalata Verde, a requisite order every visit. Included are recipes from celebrated chefs all over the world, like a greatest hits cookbook with no geographic boundaries. It will make you want to cook, eat and travel the world. Dan Buettner has spent the last 20 years studying and writing about Blue Zones, where he reports that people live longer and with less disease than anywhere else in the world.
